How To Prepare Your Apartment For A Professional Cleaning

  • How to Prepare Your Apartment For A Professional Cleaning

A professional cleaning service can be a game changer. Especially for busy folks, having someone else do the hard work of getting all of your home’s surfaces cleaned, dusted, and disinfected can help you manage stress and give you more time for your family, your work, or just more time to relax. For those who work from home, having a professional cleaner come in can make sure both your office space and your living space is tranquil, relaxing, and productive.

But if you’re hiring a professional for the first time, you may be uncertain about how to get the most from your pro cleaning service — after all, you want to put your cleaners in the best position to do a fantastic job. Many of us may even find ourselves asking: how do I prepare my apartment for my first professional cleaning? Read on for some dos and don’ts about getting your place ready for a pro cleaner.

Do: Think About Your Furry Friends

If you share your apartment space with pets, it pays to spend some time thinking about what they’ll need before and on cleaning day. If you have cats, cleaners won’t tackle the litter box, so it’s a good idea to have that scooped and cleaned before they arrive, so they can vacuum and sweep the surrounding floors. Cats are generally fine to stay in the apartment during the cleaning itself, as they’ll usually find a cozy location to hide and wait out the strangers in their domain.

If you happen to have a protective or reactive dog, it’s a great idea to have a safety plan during the cleaning itself. If you’ll be home, you may plan to keep Fido near you, but if you’ll be out of the apartment it may be a good idea to have your pup safe in a room you don’t need cleaned, crated, or out of the apartment altogether during your professional cleaning.

Picking up animal toys and clutter before your cleaner arrives can also help you ensure that nothing is misplaced — no one wants to be searching for a pet’s favorite toy when walk time comes around!

Don’t: Sweep Or Clean Your Floors

Many of us feel like we ought to tidy up our floors before cleaners come, but this is one area where you can set your mind at ease! As long as your floors are cleared of clutter (including boxes, kids’ toys, or other items that might get in the way), this is an area where you can let your professional cleaners shine — literally. You can expect your professional cleaning to include sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping all of your floors.

Do: Tackle The Dishes

Unless you’ve made a specific arrangement with your cleaning service, you shouldn’t expect your professional cleaners to tackle dirty dishes. In fact, leaving a pile of dishes in the sink can make it harder for your cleaners to scrub and disinfect your kitchen surfaces. Washing your dishes and clearing any food waste out of the kitchen will help your cleaners ensure that your kitchen can be properly cleaned, deodorized, and disinfected.

Don’t: Dust

You can expect your professional cleaning service to take care of tasks such as dusting, wiping down surfaces, clearing cobwebs, and disinfecting kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Don’t worry about clearing dust off of your bookshelves or fan blades – those tasks are easily handled by the pros.

Do: Declutter

Decluttering is probably the most important job you can tackle to set your professional cleaning up for success. After all, the cleaners you hire won’t know where kids’ toys or your important documents are supposed to be, and if they’re guessing, it becomes more likely that something important will be misplaced or lost. Organizing and putting away stacks of paperwork, picking up stray laundry items, and clearing accumulated items off of your bathroom and kitchen counters makes it easier for your cleaners to get to those areas and make sure they can be properly and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Don’t: Take Out The Trash

Taking out the trash, including emptying wastebaskets, taking out recycling, and clearing your kitchen trash, are all tasks you can expect your cleaners to take care of for you. Unless your trash is overflowing, this is one thing you can leave to the pros.

Do: Communicate!

If you’re unsure about whether your cleaner can be expected to handle a particular task for you, ask questions! Your professional cleaning service is here to serve your needs, and asking questions early and often can help you understand what to expect and can set your mind at ease, especially before your first cleaning. A lot of our clients have questions about things like eco-friendly cleaning products or how to make sure their cleaning will be safe for their pets or kids, and we love to have those conversations. Your professional cleaning should be a way to take some tasks off your plate, not a source of stress, so feel free to reach out to your cleaning service with any questions, no matter how big or small.
