How to Clean to Get Ready for Your Post-Vaccine Summer Parties

  • How to Clean to Get Ready for Your Post-Vaccine Summer Parties

According to a poll from Gallup, 25% of all Americans would name summer as their very favorite season.

And it’s not hard to see why! For one thing, summer is the ultimate time for heading outside and having fun in the sun.Whether you love road trips to the beach, backyard barbecues, or heading to your favorite local park, there’s practically no limit to what you can do with the long, luxurious days and cool nights of this spectacular season!

That’s especially true in 2021, as Chicago starts to slowly but surely reopen its  restaurants, parks, and performance venues. After a long year spent navigating travel restrictions and lockdowns meant to turn the tide of the coronavirus pandemic, people who have been vaccinated against COVID are eager to see friends and family and do what it takes to truly make this a summer to remember.

For many people, that’s going to mean welcoming people over for patio parties and air conditioned indoor get-togethers for the first time in months. For many, welcoming over guests is going to mean dealing with indoor and outdoor spaces that might have gone untouched for nearly a year.

If you’re nervous about people seeing your messy space, know that you’re not alone; many people are dealing with burgeoning post-pandemic anxiety, on top of the normal stresses of cleaning and tidying.

We know that shaking off the dust and grime and getting everything ready for your first safe, thoughtful, post-COVID summertime parties can take some work. That’s where we come in!

So, how can you get your place ready for all the fun of this unique and celebratory post-vaccine summer season? Here are a few projects to tick off your list so you can get the party started in no time!

1.) Clean Your Patio or Deck Area

Whether you want to lounge outside solo with a good book and an iced tea, or bring over friends and family for a festive meal, it’s important to make sure that your outdoor spaces look clean and inviting.

Your outdoor space may be concrete, stone, brick, or wood. Whatever it’s made out of, your first step should be to brush it off with a sturdy broom, getting all of the leaves, dirt, and other debris that might have gathered up over the off-season.

Next, you’ll want to really clean the surface. In some cases, you may wish to look into renting or hiring on a power-washer, to handle a larger area more efficiently, or to deal with serious dirt and mildew issues.

If you want to handle this project DIY, it’s important to take note of what you’re working with! For example, you can usually clean exterior concrete or brick with a mix of water and bleach, or water and vinegar for an all-natural solution. Certain types of wood, or other specialty surfaces, might need a slightly different approach.

Remember to polish up your railings, and clean your outdoor lighting fixtures. Safety first! Remember to use extendable reach tools so that you can knock down cobwebs and get close to the edge of your patio, while keeping your feet on solid ground. If you do use a stepstool, have a spotter next to you to help you stay grounded.

2.) Spruce Up Your Outdoor Furniture and Decor

Nothing brings together an outdoor space like a little bit of all-weather furniture! But these items can start to look dingy if you let them sit out for too long.

Fortunately, you can revive your outdoor furniture with just a little bit of work! For metal or plastic furniture, be sure to remove any cloth cushions, then spray the furniture down with a hose. Next, wipe it down with a solution of water and dish soap, then spray it down again and let it dry.

Be sure to wipe down your wicker and wood furniture as well, using a brush or towel and your favorite solution of water and soap. You’ll also want to vacuum any outdoor rugs or welcome mats you may have, and machine wash any fabric furniture covers that look a little worse for the wear after our wet spring (or consider replacing them altogether). Be sure to give any outdoor decor a good scrubbing and disinfecting before setting it out for the season.

3.) Take Care of Your Windows and Doors

Have a sliding glass door that opens up your indoor area to the great outdoors? Have a window that you’d love to throw open for fresh air and natural light while you’re entertaining? If you do, it’s important to make sure that you give these spots some TLC!

First, you’ll want to make sure you clean your windows and glass doors, so that you can really let all of the natural light of summer shine in. This may include wiping down not only the glass surface of the windows, but also window sills, frames, and blinds. Our complete guide to cleaning windows on your own is available right here!

At the same time, don’t forget to clean out the tracks of your sliding windows and doors! These out-of-the-way areas can get seriously dirty over time. You can clear out these areas – and help your doors and windows glide more easily – by vacuuming the tracks with a hand vacuum, then wiping them down with a wet cloth. You may also want to use a toothbrush or other implement to help scrub out some of the grit. There are also special lubricants you can apply to these areas, to really help your sliding doors and windows along.

5.) Get Your Kitchen Ready

No matter how much you may try to guide guests to other parts of the house, doesn’t it seem like everybody at the party almost always just ends up in the kitchen?

Whether you’re having a few friends over for dinner, or throwing a huge summer shindig, there’s a good chance that your houseguests will spend at least a little bit of time in the kitchen. It’s important to make sure that this spot feels clean, fresh, and inviting!

Here are a few items you may want to put on your kitchen cleaning checklist, before or after a summer get-together:

6.) Make Sure Your Bathrooms Are Ready for Guests

After a year of lockdown, your guest bathroom may be in need of some TLC – especially before company comes to visit! Be sure to take out the trash, give your floors a quick scrubbing, and wipe down your toilet, shower, sink basin, and fixtures with your favorite all-natural bathroom cleanser.

You may also want to disinfect common touchpoints before and after your visitors come by – this includes the lightswitch, faucet handles, toilet handle, and doorknobs. Give your mirror a quick polish, add a fresh roll of toilet paper, and don’t forget to wash your linens or set out some new hand towels to welcome your guests.
