After a year like 2020, we all deserve the chance to rest, relax, and spend some time focusing on ourselves. Fortunately, making time for self-care does not have to mean giving up on being green! There are all sorts of amazing ways to take care of yourself and fulfill your personal needs, while still making sustainable choices and building healthy habits that will benefit the planet.
What Is Self-Care?
… any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we very often overlook. Good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety. It’s also key to a good relationship with oneself and others.
Self-care might mean anything and everything from making sure you get enough sleep at night, to spending time in the fresh air and sunshine, to taking up a soothing and relaxing hobby that lets you step away from work for a few hours at a time. The more focus you put on self-care, the better off you’ll be in nearly every aspect of your life! As VeryWellMind puts it:
When you’ve taken steps to care for your mind and body, you’ll be better equipped to live your best life.
Ideas for Sustainable Self-Care In 2021
Self-care is not a luxury; it is a priority. Taking care of yourself is one of the best ways to make sure you have energy and love to give to others. If it helps, think of it this way: In airplanes, don’t they always tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others? It goes that way in every element of life. The more you fill your own cup, the better equipped you’ll be to care for others.
With that being said, there’s no reason why self-care can’t be comfortable, cozy, extravagant — and sustainable! Rather than consuming wasteful products, we’ll all be better off if we think about how we can make our go-to self-care tactics more mindful in 2021.
Here are a few great sustainable self-care ideas to try at home. What would you add to the list?
Silk and linen bed sheets and pillow covers
We all need to sleep! Rest is an essential part of self-care, and using the right bedding is an essential part of getting plenty of rest. Silk is an incredibly comfortable and luxurious fabric — and is actually one of the more sustainable fibers out there. As CFDA explains, silk is a renewable resource, is biodegradable, and “uses less water, chemicals, and energy than many other fibers.”
Cotton swabs made from organic cotton
All of my fellow beauty gurus out there know how important cotton swabs are for your everyday arsenal! Organic cotton swabs are a great choice for stocking your supply cupboard. Free from unnecessary chemicals and often sustainably harvested, organic cotton can be found online or at most grocery and beauty supply stores.
Plant-based toothpicks made from cornstarch or bamboo
Have you ever thought about the lifecycle of a toothpick? One way to get all the use of a toothpick with less waste is to opt for natural eco-friendly picks made from materials like cornstarch or bamboo, which are extremely durable and functional while being better for the environment.
When you want to bring a calming or invigorating scent into a space, use essential oils! These handy oils are made from the essence of plants, and are great for cleaning, pest control, or simply spreading a sweet aroma around your home. Better yet, essential oils are highly concentrated, meaning that you can use just a little bit diluted with water. You can also reuse or upcycle glass bottles and jars to house your essential oil-based goodies.
Protect your pearly whites — without having to use a disposable, plastic toothbrush. Bamboo is one of the most eco-friendly materials out there, particularly because it is fully biodegradable. Compare that to plastic, which can take a thousand years to decompose! Every year, it is estimated that humans go through more than 3 billion plastic toothbrushes — making this a small switch with a big impact.
Compostable mailers & wheat pens
Writing is a wonderful way to stay connected, and is a proven way to help you relax, unwind, and reflect. Unfortunately, many writing kits are far from eco-friendly. Fold compostable paper and mailers and wheat straw pens into your writing routine the next time you jot down bullet notes or send a letter to a friend.
Organic, sustainable candles
You can indulge your candle habit while still protecting the planet! Lots of brands have started producing sustainable and zero-waste candles made with renewable materials such as vegan coconut wax and responsible packaging. Check out SLOW-MADE and Adorn for some environmentally friendly examples!
