Every year, about 60% of people say that they make New Year’s resolutions — but only about 8% actually manage to stick to them over time. Those numbers are sure to be a bit different this year, coming out of the strange and unusual year that was 2020.
It goes without saying that 2020 was unpredictable and difficult — and no one is quite sure what 2021 is going to have in store just yet. At the same time, studies show that people are particularly stressed about keeping their homes clean and tidy during this holiday season — after a year full of coronavirus restrictions, social distancing, and remote learning and working.
- 29% say that they felt stressed over what others think about their home
- 27% worry about missing dirty spots
- 23% attribute the stress to having a high standard of cleanliness
- 23% say that their kids made keeping a clean home difficult
- 47% say that they have a whole room filled with clutter and junk
That’s a lot to take on — especially right now, with the weight of all things 2020 on your back.
Whether you’re eager to see what 2021 has in store or feeling a bit more cautious, one thing’s for certain: It’s going to be important to go into this new year with an open mind, a lot of patience and flexibility, and a home that empowers you to be your best.
A clean home can help you do all that, and so much more!
Living More Healthfully
For millions of us here in Chicago and around the world, 2020 was a wakeup call. Many people learned quickly about how to keep their homes and offices sanitary and safe from coronavirus — and (hopefully) started thinking ahead about how to better prepare for the next emerging pathogen. People experimented with new cleaning agents, and got very familiar with the EPA’s list of approved disinfectants.
At the same time, 2020 changed our lifestyles. More time at home meant more hours in front of the screen, and less nourishing social time with friends and family. More time meditating or exercising at home, and less time at the yoga studio or gym.
As we move into 2021, now is a wonderful time to reflect on the lifestyle and personal changes that you want to keep moving forward — and start changing the habits or routines that don’t make you feel your very best.
The little things add up, and cleaning your home is a great place to get started!
Dreaming of hopping back on the treadmill, or starting a meaningful new hobby in the new year? You’re far more likely to do so if your workout space is clean and organized, and your office or craft room is ready for you to pursue your passions.
Adopting More Sustainable Practices
I’m going to step up on my soapbox for a minute! To adapt to COVID, many of us changed up our daily habits and routines. And while that was incredibly important to do for our health and safety, I’m worried that it may have a lasting effect on our environment.
You see, single-use disposable products were everywhere in 2020. From plastic forks with that order of takeout, to grocery stores actually temporarily banning reusable bags, our country took a big step back in terms of sustainability over the last few months.
To me, that makes 2021 all the more important as a year to focus on getting back on track, and adopting practices that will help protect our oceans, rivers, and skies for generations to come!
Again, a great place to start is with rethinking how you clean your most-used spaces. At Sweeping Dimensions, exploring new green cleaning tools and solutions and sharing them with our Chicago community has been our passion for years now. In fact, in December 2020, we offered fully complimentary green products to all of our clients, to help inspire them to make sustainable swaps moving forward in 2021!
If you want to talk about our favorite environmentally friendly products and practices, I am always here and happy to chat! From bamboo scrubbers and bamboo paper towels, to biodegradable trash bags, to reusable glass bottles and concentrated cleaning products, I am happy to help you find what works and come up with a plan for making your entire cleaning arsenal more sustainable in the new year!
After a year of having to stay in, avoid other people, work from home, and step up your disinfecting game, it’s only natural to feel burnt out.
If you felt more stressed and anxious in 2020, you definitely weren’t alone. This past year was scary and unpredictable. Experts have determined that all of the ripple effects of the coronavirus pandemic have pushed America “into a mental health crisis,” with “depression and anxiety rising” across the country.
With that in mind, let’s make 2021 the year we take care of ourselves — mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Working from the outside in can help. As Darby Saxbe, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Southern California has put it:
“[Cleaning] gives people a sense of mastery and control over their environment… Life is full of uncertainty and many situations are out of our hands, but at least we can assert our will on our living space.”
Studies have shown that the act of cleaning can help reduce stress, relieve anxiety, and lift your spirits. At the same time, cleaning can be a great first step in creating an environment that is dedicated first and foremost to rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Make 2021 the year you fill your home with peace and serenity, in whatever ways work for you — from calming candles and essential oils, to a fluffy bathrobe, to a tidy balcony perfect for your morning meditation.
