Chunky sweaters, pumpkin pie, steaming mugs of tea, walking through a wonderland of falling leaves… Fall in Chicago really has it all!
With some key social distancing measures still in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, however, this is sure to be a fall like no other. Across Chicago, more people will be working and learning from home — while still trying to enjoy all that this magical, golden season has to offer.
One way to enjoy a cozy, comfortable fall is to tackle some important items on your cleaning checklist. The earlier you get your cleaning responsibilities out of the way, the less you’ll have to stress about it when you’d rather be baking, reading, or sleeping in on a perfect fall day.
So, what should go on your fall cleaning to-do list? Here are some tried-and-true steps that can make this the most relaxing and reinvigorating autumn ever:
1.) Wash Your Sheets, Blankets, and Linens
What could be better on a cold autumn day than snuggling up under your favorite blanket? Get your home ready for weekend Netflix marathons and long, lazy mornings by taking care of your sheets, blankets, linens, and towels right away. Always be sure to look up manufacturers’ instructions before laundering your favorite sheets. To keep your comforter and throw blankets looking their best, give them a regular vacuuming with a handheld attachment to get rid of dust and debris, and freshen up fabrics with a homemade misting spray made from your favorite essential oils.
2.) Get Rid of Dust
Doesn’t all that golden autumn sun seem to just shine a spotlight on all of the dust around your home? As you settle in for fall, keep cabin fever (and fall allergies) at bay by getting rid of dust and debris.
We always recommend microfiber cleaning cloths, which do a better job of trapping and removing dust than rags or feather dusters. Be sure to work top to bottom in each room, so that any dust you knock down from high places can be swept or vacuumed up later. To free up time later in the season, invest a little bit of effort in getting to all of the awkward or hard-to-reach spaces you might normally skip — this includes high corners, the spaces under your furniture, your ceiling fan blades, and the nooks and crannies above your windows, doors, and cabinets.
3.) Polish Up Your Windows and Doors
Who doesn’t love looking through a window and watching autumn work its magic? For a picture-perfect view of the changing leaves, be sure to clean your windows and glass doors as soon as possible.
Clean away dust, then use your favorite glass cleanser, a squeegee, and a clean, dry cloth for a truly streak-free finish. At the same time, take a moment to remove dust from your window treatments and blinds, and polish up your windowsill and the surrounding frame.
The more natural light you can let in, the better. Studies have shown that people who get more access to natural light tend to feel happier and calmer. Letting in more light from your windows can also help you cut down on those autumn utility bills.
4.) Clean Your Lights and Light Fixtures
With the sun going down earlier and earlier each day, now is the time to make sure your lighting fixtures are ready for those cold, dark fall nights.
Take some time to treat your home’s light bulbs, chandeliers, pendant lights, recessed lights, and ceiling fixtures to help get rid of any dust and grime that may have built up over the summer months. Remember to put your safety first! Always turn off or unplug a light fixture before trying to clean it; make sure you give light bulbs time to cool down; be gentle with glass; and have a spotter on hand if you’re planning to use a ladder or step stool.
5.) Do a Little “Fall Back” Maintenance
As you pencil in a reminder to set back your clocks during the fall, think about all of the other routine maintenance you can tackle around your home. This annual milestone can be a great reminder to check and replace the batteries in your home’s smoke alarm; replace your furnace filters and clean your air vents; schedule appointments for HVAC and plumbing maintenance; do a deep cleaning in your garage or attic; get rid of mold in your bathroom; and check around your property for broken windows, doors, and other damage as you weatherproof for the frosty winter to come.
6.) Get Your Patio and Deck Ready
The end of summer unfortunately means the end of patio season. Before the chilliest days of the year settle in, take some time to clean off your home’s outdoor spaces. As you move your outdoor decor and furniture into storage, give these items a good cleaning.
Sweep off the floor of your deck, rooftop, or patio; wipe down your sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows; polish up your railings; get rid of cobwebs and dust in high areas; and give your outdoor light fixtures a solid scrubbing. Be safe! Remember to use the right tools for the job and avoid overextending your reach — especially if you live on a high floor.
7.) Get Your Electronics and Appliances Ready to Hunker Down With You
Fall in Chicagoland is often a time to hunker down at home. That’s particularly true this year, as social distancing measures mean that kids and parents alike will have to work remotely. Are your home’s electronic devices and appliances ready for a season full of Zoom calls, virtual lessons, and well-deserved downtime?
Take time to get the dust and debris off of your electronics devices, and make sure you give your household appliances a little TLC at the start of the season — including your oven and stovetop, your washing machine, your dishwasher, and your refrigerator.
