We know this is a stressful time. And our mission will always be to make a sweeping effort to make life less stressful.
As we all stay home and do our part to maintain healthy social distancing practices and flatten the COVID-19 curve, it’s easy to start to feel just a bit cooped up.
We know that a little at-home isolation can go a long way — especially during the warm, sunny summer months, when everyone is itching to entertain. So, what can you do when you’re spending the season of backyard barbecues and July Fourth get-togethers at home? It may help to take a little bit of time to refresh the room where you and your loved ones sit down to eat: the dining room.
Refreshing Your Dining Room In No Time
Beside the kitchen and living room, the dining room is one of the most functional and important spaces in any home. In addition to providing the setting for extravagant dinner parties and holiday meals, many of us also use our dining rooms as homework staging areas, makeshift storage rooms, craft studios, and so much more.
As you pass through the dining room each day, it’s easy to start to feel “stuck in a rut.” Looking to bring the life, energy, and community spirit back to your dining room, especially after months of social distancing? Here are ten simple steps you can take to make your home’s dining area feel just like new in no time:
1.) Update Your Tablescapes and Decor
Tired of the same old, same old? One way to bring a whole new feel into your dining space is to swap out your table decor. From switching out your old tablecloth for a new pattern or design; to using a new set of bowls and plates; to handcrafting a stunning centerpiece perfect for the season, there’s no shortage of creative ways to make sitting down to eat feel like a brand new experience.
2.) Get Rid of All That Excess Clutter
For many of us, our dining rooms serve as home offices, art studios, and a storage area for papers, kitchen gadgets, plant supplies, and plenty of other clutter. This is even more true right now, as social distancing has forced many of us to transform our dining rooms into classrooms and video-conferencing centers. To appreciate your dining room again, take some time to get rid of all the clutter that you can. Be methodical and thorough as you divide what items you can find a new home for, what you should trash, and what you should donate.
3.) Add New Functionality
If your home is running out of places to stash kids’ toys or craft supplies, the dining room could be the perfect match – as long as you’re strategic! Instead of throwing things all over your dining room table, look for creative new ways to add functionality to this space – from stylish credenzas and bookshelves, to hanging baskets, to “dual-purpose” furniture that can fold up and out of the way whenever you have company over.
4.) Refresh Your Walls
Dining room starting to feel a bit drab? Your walls may be to blame! Kids, pets, and parents alike all pass through this important space each and every day, and it’s easy for your dining room walls to start to feel a bit grimy and banged up. Spend some time looking for scratches and scuff marks, and gently remove them using your favorite cleanser. At the same time, think big picture, and consider adding a fresh coat of paint or a new, vibrant wallpaper pattern to enliven this familiar space. You can also make use of your dining room walls to show off your favorite art, by creating a gallery wall, hanging a tapestry, or even creating a green “living wall” out of hanging succulents and cacti.
5.) Switch Up the Seating Arrangements
For starters? If you never sit down and savor a meal in your dining room, give it a try! So many of us take this space for granted – so sitting down and actually using it for its intended purpose can be truly eye-opening, whether you’re gathering for a Sunday supper or simply enjoying a quiet work lunch at home. If you’re a more frequent dining room user, try changing up where everyone sits every now and then. Making little shifts to a routine like this can help shake things up, and allow you to see the space from a fresh perspective.
6.) Polish Your Baseboards, Doorways, and Molding
Here in Chicago, many dining rooms are notable for their high ceilings and impressive, original trimwork. If it’s been awhile since your last deep cleaning, take some time to polish up your dining room’s trim – such as baseboards, wainscotting, crown molding, and doorframes. Getting the dust, grime, and cobwebs off of these hard-to-reach accents can really refresh the entire room.
7.) Rethink How You’re Presenting Your Best China and Antiques
Many people use the dining room to show off their most precious family heirlooms, such as fine wedding china, to antiques, to collections that have passed from generation to generation. This summer may be an ideal time to clean around your finest collectibles and artifacts – while keeping these precious, one-of-a-kind items safe. Once you’ve gotten rid of dust and debris, think if there’s a new way to showcase your collection in the best possible light, such as adding a small spotlight or simply rearranging your artifacts for more of a visual impact.
8.) Change Up the Flow of the Space
How are you using your dining room right now – and what would it take to start using this space differently? For example, if you do not regularly have large gatherings, you could invest in a smaller table and easily subdivide this space using chic, affordable room dividers. Or, if you’re getting seriously into plants right now, you could look into setting up a gorgeous display room for all of your houseplants.
9.) Bring In Your Favorite Songs and Sounds
Playing the perfect song or soundscape can really elevate your next dinner at home. Look into simple, cost-effective ways to introduce audio equipment into your dining room – from a new smart home speaker system to a portable Bluetooth device that lets you carry the party from room to room.
10.) Make Little Fixes and Updates
Tired of the sound your chairs make on the hardwood floor? Look into new pads for your chair legs, or consider adding a large rug to the space. Tired of your overhead light? Consider swapping it out for a new, modern design. Sticky, drafty windows or squeaky doors? These are all projects you can tackle in an afternoon or less. The more little fixes and updates you make, the more you’ll be able to enjoy your space without the stress.
