We know this is a stressful time. And our mission will always be to make a sweeping effort to make life less stressful.

Feeling ready to refresh, revive, and rediscover your space after months of staying at home to help promote healthy social distancing practices and flatten the curve on COVID-19? If you’re still reeling from cabin fever after months of working and learning from home, you’re certainly not alone.

We know that a little bit of at-home isolation can go a long way. That’s why we’ve been taking some time to give our favorite fresh, fun ideas for keeping your home’s most loved spaces feeling brand new. This week, it’s time to focus on: your living room.

This is the space where your whole family should feel comfortable gathering at the end of the day. While you may normally use your living room for entertaining, odds are it’s become a central hub for everything over the last few weeks — perhaps serving as a home gym, art studio, teleworking office, and Netflix-marathon HQ.

So, what can you do when your living room starts to feel a little bit tired or dull, especially right now?

If weeks of social distancing have made you all-too-familiar with every corner of the room, here are ten simple steps you can take to make your living feel just like new in no time:

1.) Rearrange Your Living Room Coffee Table

In many living rooms, the coffee table is the center of attention. It’s the focal point of the space, pulling the entire room together. Make this functional decor piece the piece de resistance by cleaning it off to make it sparkle, then decorating to suit your style with books, flowers, ornaments, runners, mementos, and more. Don’t forget to regularly disinfect this “high-touch” surface with an EPA-approved disinfectant, to help minimize the spread of bacteria and germs.

2.) Make Use of Awkward Corners and Extra Spaces

Chicago architecture is a marvel — but there’s no denying that it can also produce rooms with some awkward nooks and crannies. If your home has a turret, bay window, or little area under the stairs that you’re not making use of, get creative and capitalize on every inch of your space. This could include setting up a miniature workstation for Zoom calls, creating a play area for the kids, or designing the perfect lounging area for your fur babies.

3.) Restyle Your Shelves and Mantel

Looking to make your room feel fresh in no time? Rethink your tired mantelpiece, shelves, and built-ins. Start by taking everything off, and giving the surface a thorough wipedown. Then, think about how you can make these display and storage spaces sing — by rearranging your decorative pieces, bringing in fresh pops of color, handcrafting new bookends or sculptures, or choosing new artwork, books, or photographs to showcase.

4.) Shake Out Your Living Room Rugs

A large, picturesque rug is a powerful way to bring a living room together. In many ways, the look and feel of your rug can be a deciding factor in the aesthetics of the entire space. In addition to regular vacuuming and spot treatments (as needed), be sure to occasionally take some time to deep clean your rugs. Besides hiring or renting a carpet cleaner to shampoo your rug, you can pick it up and shake it or beat it out to get rid of crumbs and debris that you may not even be able to notice with the naked eye. While your rug is rolled up or out of the way, be sure to clean the patch of floor that it normally covers, to get rid of any dirt, dust, or scratches that may have been hidden away.

5.) Clean Those “Out of the Way” Spots

Want to get your hands dirty? One of the best ways to bring life back into your living room is to get rid of those hard-to-reach messes that you’d normally let slide. Take some time to lead a deep cleaning, focusing on frequently overlooked cleaning jobs:

  • Knock the dust and cobwebs out of high corners
  • Polish your trim and crown molding
  • Clean the floor underneath your bulky furniture pieces
  • Dust the tops and bottoms of your ceiling fan blades
  • Polish door knobs and light switches
  • Clean above and around your windows

6.) Dust Off Your Electronics

If your living room doubles as your media space, cleaning and refreshing your electronics can be a powerful way to make it feel new in no time. Carefully dust off your TV, PC, computer routers, speakers, and other devices. Then, take some time to sanitize and disinfect your remote controls, keyboards, phones, touchscreens and other digital accessories. Without regular care, these handheld devices can easily become some of the germiest spots in your entire home.

7.) Give Your Windows the TLC Treatment

Let the light shine in! Wash your windows, clean your screens, dust your windowsill, and consider taking some time to wash off your shades or vacuum the dust and debris out of your drapes and blinds. You might also take some time at home to freshen up the decor around your windows — by, say, constructing your own DIY window treatments, roman shades, and curtains.

8.) Rearrange Your Furniture and Decor

Are you making the most of your space? Whether you want to maximize your square footage or simply give your living room a new jolt of life, take some time to reimagine the layout of your room, and then rearrange your furniture accordingly. Some simple steps can make a huge difference — like swapping which wall the couch is on, changing the angle of an accent chair, or even repositioning or reshuffling your picture frames, houseplants, and lamps.

9.) Stash Away Toys, Games, and Clutter

Did you know that it’s scientifically proven that living in a messy, cluttered environment can increase your stress levels — and contribute to a whole host of negative health effects? Help give your mind and body a boost by strategically getting rid of the everyday clutter that may be piling up around your living room, including toys, games, art supplies, pet supplies, and more. Discard or donate what you don’t need, and look into clever and chic storage solutions for the rest, from wicker baskets you can tuck underneath the coffee table, to compact storage chests which double as eye-catching furniture.

10.) Reset Your Daily Schedule

Feeling tired of your living room? Using this space in a new way might help you see it in a whole new light. For example, if you find yourself doing most of your telecommuting from the living room, try switching it up for a day or two and operating out of a new space in your home (such as the bedroom). This way, you can reset your living room to make it a place of relaxation and peace once again.
