As the legendary poet Anne Bradstreet once put it:
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.”
Here in Chicago, we’re famous for our tough and bracing winters, which come complete with heavy snowfall, freezing winds, and cold, gray days. But true Chicagoans know that those tough Lake Michigan winds and snowstorms aren’t really what our area is about. Instead, our city truly blossoms to life in the springtime – when flowers spring from the ground, the sun peeks out from behind the clouds, little kids stampede onto soccer fields, and people all over town throw open their windows and doors to greet the new season.
Here in Chicago, spring can settle in in an instant – and yet winter’s effects can often continue to be felt, long after the season comes to an end. After a long winter of hibernating indoors and shielding yourself from the winter weather, it might take some time to start getting in that fresh, inspired spring headspace once again.
Even more importantly? It may take some time and adjustment to transition your indoor and outdoor spaces into spring mode, after another endless winter.
So, what cleaning tasks should be on your to-do list as you prepare to spring forward into the best months of the year? Here are five cleaning tasks to take on as you transition out of winter and get ready for a glorious, fun-filled spring:
Clean Your Mudroom, Garage, and Other Entryways
It’s time to make the swap from snow and salt, to mud and rain! Your home’s entryways probably took a beating during the winter months, with people coming in with salt-crusted boots, icy paws, and jackets covered in snow. During the spring, your main thoroughfares will instead probably see wet umbrellas, dirty cleats, and grass clippings falling off of your beloved fur-baby after their morning walk.
During the “shoulder season” between winter and spring, take some time to clean and refresh these spaces. Clean your floors, wash or swap out your doormats, dust your storage spaces, and polish your doorknobs and windows. Before spring rain settles in, take some time to lay out a spot for taking off muddy boots, hanging umbrellas, and seamlessly stashing away raincoats and windbreakers. Refresh your front entryway so it makes a great first impression on any spring visitors who may stop by.
Organize and Clean Your Closets, Your Basement, and Other Storage Areas
The shoulder season can be a busy time for packing up all the fun stuff from one season – and breaking out all the goodies for the next! Around February and March, you may find yourself regularly trekking into your basement or opening up your closet doors to stash winter clothes, boots, and outdoor gear. Meanwhile, you may find yourself breaking out more and more spring gear, like light jackets, outdoor decor, and the luggage you need for that spring break getaway.
As you sort through these storage spaces, keep them clean and tidy. Regularly wipe down your shelves, and keep an eye out for any dust, sand, or dirt that’s been dislodged. This time of year can also be a great opportunity to undertake a major decluttering, and add creative new storage solutions for the things you keep – like door organizers, wall-hangers, or labeled cubbies.
Refresh Your Windows and Doors
After months of freezing rain and snow, your windows and doors are probably a little worse for wear. Welcome the season – and let in the fresh air and sunshine – by giving these areas a good look. Fill up any gaps or cracks and replace damaged screens. Meanwhile, give your windows and glass doors a good cleaning with your favorite glass cleanser solution, a clean reusable cloth, and a squeegee for that streak-free shine. Don’t forget to give your blinds and curtains some love, and dust your window sills and door frames, for good measure.
Get Your Patio, Deck, or Rooftop Ready
What’s a warm spring day without a little fun in the sun? As the weather warms up and grows brighter, start getting your outdoor living spaces ready for barbecues, parties, or lazy afternoons spent relaxing with a good book. Start breaking out your outdoor furniture and decor, cleaning as you go – this may include wiping down outdoor tables and chairs after you uncover them for the season, washing your doormats and outdoor cushions, and hosing down your planters and other gardening gear. At the same time, carve out a few hours to give your balcony, porch, deck, or rooftop some TLC. Clean your floors, wipedown your light fixtures, polish your railings, and keep your floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors looking spotless. Remember to be safe! Bring a spotter outside with you, try not to use step stools or ladders, and use tools with extendable reach so you can stay far from the edge of your balcony.
Start Prepping for Allergy Season
For allergy sufferers, spring weather can bring red eyes, coughing, sneezing, and sniffles. This year, take some precautions that can make allergy season easier for all of the hay fever sufferers in your life. Give all of your surfaces a good dusting. Keep your air vents clean and free of debris, and be sure to regularly change your air filter to help curb the spread of pollutants and allergens. Look for and treat mold in your bathrooms, basement, and attic, and be sure to regularly launder your bedding and clean your houseplants, so that they can keep purifying the air throughout your space.
