7 Surprising Spots You’re Not Cleaning (But Should Be)

  • Areas around the home that are not being cleaned

If you’re anything like us, then you’ve probably got a pretty set routine. It can be incredibly helpful and productive to hone sensible habits – but it can also lead to you developing some key blind spots over time. In particular? When you’re set in one predictable cleaning process, it’s easy to start overlooking some of the other, less obvious spots around your home!

In the days ahead, start looking at your space with fresh eyes, and you may be surprised by how many spots you’re not cleaning as part of your regular routine. Cleaning these “invisible” areas may actually help you breathe easier, feel better, and enjoy your home even more!

Here are seven commonly overlooked spaces that can get grimy and dirty – and what you can do to take control, before it’s too late:

1.) Air Vents

Your home should be an oasis – complete with fresh-feeling air! Houseplants and standalone air purifiers can only go so far if the air that flows into your rooms comes loaded with dust, dander, pollen, and other allergens. In addition to regularly changing your furnace filters, be sure to regularly clean your floor and ceiling vents. Regularly dust and vacuum the outside of your air vents, and occasionally unscrew the plates to clear out their undersides with a microfiber cloth or vacuum extension.

2.) Light Switches and Plates

Think about the spots around your home that you touch every single day. Chances are, your home’s light switches rank quite high on that list. Light switches and plates are often covered in unwanted bacteria, and can become greasy and oily to the touch over time. Be sure to regularly clean these important-but-overlooked spots with a clean cloth, gently dampened with a solution of water and mild dish soap.

3.) Walls

Scuff marks, crayon marks, and smudges, oh my! While most of us want our walls to look clean and pristine, the reality is that everyday life can take a toll. From exuberant kids trying out art projects, to pets rubbing against your paint job after rolling in the grass, there’s no limit to what your walls may see in a given day – let alone a month! In addition to spot-treating stains and blemishes as they happen, be sure to regularly wipe down your walls with a dry cloth to get rid of dust, then follow with a mild cleanser for fingerprints, grime, and scuff marks. And don’t forget to routinely turn your attention to those hard-to-reach spots, including high corners, crown molding, and baseboards. These are all spots that should be dusted regularly.

4.) Kitchen and Bathroom Hardware

The next time you open a drawer to pull out your favorite apple peeler or speciality soap, take a second to remember the last time you cleaned the hardware of your cabinets. If it’s been a while, it may be high time to break out your cleaning caddy and get to work. Be sure to regularly disinfect all of your doorknobs, handles, cabinet pulls, and other hardware with a bleach-based cleanser. Be careful, in order to avoid damaging your wooden doors and trim.

5.) Shower Heads & Drains

Most of us prefer not to think about all of the grime that gets circulated through our showers and down our drains – and for good reason! Still, it’s important to regularly clean and sanitize the spaces that you use to freshen up every day. In addition to keeping an eye out for mold and mildew and regularly cleaning your grout and tile, take time every so often to clean your shower head, drain, and faucet handles. For one thing, the fixtures in your bath may be dirtier than you think; in fact, coliform bacteria can be found on 9 percent of bathroom faucet handles, along with other nasties like mold particles and staph. For another, regularly cleaning these spots can help your shower run more efficiently, getting rid of clogs and backups that can cost you money and time in the long run. 6.) Electronics Equipment

While you settle in for a peaceful weekend full of Disney+ action, the bacteria on your home electronics equipment and accessories is sure to be working overtime. Indeed, scientists regularly name TV remotes as treasure troves for unwanted bacteria. One study even found that remote controls were three times dirtier than any other item in a regular hospital room. Be sure to regularly disinfect your remote with a gentle solution of dish soap and water, lightly applied with a clean cloth. Be sure to regularly dust around your router, computer, and TV, and look into proper care for your other important pieces of tech, including headphones, keyboards, and smartphones.

7.) Kitchen and Bath Accessories

And now, for a few stats that may make you lose your lunch. Did you know that 50 percent of coffee makers are home to mold and yeast, and 9 percent may contain harmful bacteria? Or that, in the bathroom, 64% of toothbrush holders test positive for mold and yeast? Dish rags and sponges are also serious offenders; in fact, 77 percent of sponges and rags hold coliform bacteria, and 18 percent contain staph. Don’t overlook these common accessories and appliances! In addition to wiping down your counters and sink, be sure to regularly replace your sponges, toss your towels in the wash, disinfect your coffee maker, and run your toothbrush holder through the dishwasher. Cleaning these little elements can really add up to a healthier household, in time.
