It’s easy to see why so many Chicagoans love living the condo life. After all, what could be better than waking up to sweeping views of the city, or a gorgeous sunset over Lake Michigan? And besides the views, condo living can come with some truly great perks, including access to special amenities, beautiful architectural finishes, and so much more.
Ready to start really enjoying your time in your Chicago condo? It helps to have a strategy for keeping your living space clean and organized.
Of course, when you get home from a busy day of work or play, your main focus is on soaking up those beautiful city views – not breaking out the cleaning caddy. Fortunately, there are all sorts of tricks you can use to make sure your condo looks and feels sublime, in no time!
Here are five easy ideas for keeping your condo clean, so you can spend less time stressing, and more time enjoying the amenities or kicking your feet up on your private balcony:
1.) Keep Up Your Balcony or Patio Area – All Year Long
One of the best parts of high-rise living is being able to relax on the balcony and enjoy the view. If your unit comes with a patio, rooftop, or balcony area, you know how precious this space can be – and how important it is to keep it clean and ready to go.
As the weather turns cool in fall and winter, be sure to cover up your patio furniture and decor pieces, to prevent wear and tear during the colder months. Don’t forget to bring in any plants, as well! Then, as spring rolls back around, make some time for a balcony deep clean. Vacuum and sweep the space to get rid of dirt and debris, then wipe down the floors with a wet mop and tend to surfaces and lighting fixtures with your favorite all-purpose glass cleaner. Throughout the spring and summer, be sure to regularly clean your patio furniture. Dust it off with a dry brush to get rid of bulky debris, then follow with dish soap and warm water, or your favorite gentle cleanser.
Don’t forget – safety first! Work with a buddy if you’re going to be using a step stool or getting close to a railing, and consider using extendable cleaning tools (including dusters, brooms, and vacuum attachments), so you can increase your reach without putting yourself at risk of falling.
2.) Make Your Glass Windows and Doors Sparkle
Many Chicago condos have floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors, perfect for taking in some truly amazing views – and with an open, airy floor plan, you may be able to get a glimpse of these glass surfaces from throughout the unit. It’s important to make them shine!
As part of your regular cleaning routine, use your favorite glass cleanser to wipe down your windows and glass doors. Work from top to bottom using an s-pattern, then finish with a squeegee for a streak-free finish. Be sure to regularly spot-treat for little smudges, like fingerprints from a guest (or paw prints courtesy of your furriest roommate). And don’t skip on dusting around the tops and bottoms of your windows, while also regularly caring for your blinds and curtains, to make sure that every aspect of your windows is picture-perfect.
3.) Tend to Your Houseplants and Flowers
There’s nothing like a collection of beautiful green plants or colorful flowers to liven up your condo. Houseplants look amazing, and can add a welcome finishing touch to your interior decor. Even better? Many plants can also help purify the air your space, filtering out unwanted indoor pollutants like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and benzene.
In order to enjoy those benefits, it’s important to make sure your plants are always looking and feeling their best! Keep your plants well-groomed by clipping dead leaves and flowers, and be sure to regularly dust their leaves so they can keep drawing in sunlight. Be sure to regularly check around your houseplants for spilled dirt, pools of water, or fallen leaves.
4.) Make Your Kitchen a Centerpiece of the Space
Many condos are defined by their spacious open floor plans, with the kitchen taking center stage. Whether your kitchen is the centerpiece of your living area or tucked away in the back, this space is incredibly important. More likely than not, you’re going to use your kitchen in some way or another every single day. For many families, the kitchen is the primary gathering space, and may serve as a makeshift arts-and-crafts studio or a study space. It’s also one of the main areas where guests like to congregate when you entertain.
So, don’t overlook this area as you create your condo cleaning checklist! Be sure to regularly wipe down your kitchen’s surfaces, particularly your countertops and cabinets (including the hardware). Don’t forget to clean out the sink regularly, including scrubbing around faucets and fixtures. Make it a point to keep your kitchen pantry organized, and regularly clean out the storage areas in your kitchen, including the area under your sink, your closets, and the inside of your fridge.
As you work around your kitchen, be sure to consider what types of surfaces you’re going to be cleaning, as this can make a big difference in how you clean them. For instance, it’s important to be extremely gentle with appliances made of stainless steel, and only tend to countertops with cleansers that are approved for your variety of stone and finish.
5.) Make Your Entryway Shine
First impressions really do matter! If your Chicago condo comes with a separate entryway, think hard about the decor of this area, and take some practical steps to keep it clean, organized, and tidy. After all, this is the space that welcomes you home at the end of a busy day – and greets your visitors whenever you entertain!
On a day to day basis, make sure this space is free of any clutter like shoes, boots, umbrellas, and coats. Look into boxes, decorative containers, and other creative storage ideas for these common entryway items. Be sure to also regularly tend to this area with a vacuum and broom, to help deal with the puddles of water, muddy spots, and dried leaves that are bound to be tracked in every now and again.
