7 Tricks for Beating Household Humidity

  • Getting rid of household humidity

You want your home to feel like a cool and comfortable space, somewhere you can’t wait to come home to and relax in. Sometimes, though, high heat — and, even worse, heavy humidity — can creep in, turning your household oasis into more of an inescapable sauna.

Here in Chicagoland, humidity can stick around from the early days of spring to late fall, making your home feel sticky and downright oppressive. Humidity can make your hair super frizzy and annoying to deal with, create unwanted damage in your home, and just make you feel generally uncomfortable. What’s worse, it can actually cause health issues in some cases, lowering your energy and focus and increasing your likelihood of suffering from respiratory illness.

So, what can you do when your Chicago home feels like it’s weighed down with humid air? Here seven tips and tricks to help you keep your home clear and comfortable, even on those muggy Midwest days:

1.) Use ceiling fans and keep the flow of air going

Letting your ceiling fans spin can help make any room feel more comfortable. The moving air created by the fan can help evaporate excess moisture, making the room feel cooler. At the same time, you can feel good about staying green, since running a fan instead of an AC unit consumes less energy — good news for the environment, and your electric bill. Fans are also super easy to clean and maintain, particularly if you use our handy tips for keeping your unit ready to go.

2.) Maintain your AC system

Your home’s air conditioning systems can help keep things cool and promote a healthy air flow all throughout your space – if it’s in prime working condition!. If you’re dealing with an older, inefficient, or inappropriately-sized air conditioning system, it may not be able to handle a high-humidity job. Have your AC system inspected by a professional at least twice per year; in the meantime, you can take some everyday steps to keep your unit functional, like cleaning your vents and grates and cutting back ventilation around your unit.

3.) Get a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are helpful because they create dry and cool air for the indoors, absorbing the humid air like a sponge and leaving behind a more comfortable space. In addition to making the air feel clear, these handy machines can also help combat mold and mildew around the house, helping you to say goodbye to musty smells and keeping you and your family feeling better.  Like fans, dehumidifiers can also empower you to use your AC units less, lowering your environmental impact and helping keep your warm weather energy bills more manageable.

4.) Dry your laundry in the great outdoors

Laundry is a fact of life — but there are some simple steps you can take to make sure this household chore doesn’t make your house feel muggy. Drying your clothes in a machine or on an indoor drying rack can cause steam and humidity to escape into the air. If it’s possible, try setting up a clothesline or drying rack outdoors as an easy way to beat the mugginess, and reduce your energy use.

5.) Replace air filters

Regularly replacing your home’s air filters can help promote a healthy, robust flow of air throughout your space. These traps help keep harmful debris and allergens from irritating you and your family — until they get overloaded! When too much dirt and debris build up, these screens stop working, and may actually allow more harmful pollutants to escape into your space — along with unwanted humidity. Replacing those filters will keep everything flowing nice and easy — your respiratory system will thank you!

6.) Keep the bathroom as open as possible when showering / using the bath

A long, hot shower can feel great — but the steam that comes from using hot water can help pump excess humidity into your space (and cause mold growth and household damage, in time). Instead of letting this wet, muggy air linger, try to keep the bathroom window open and run your overhead ventilation, to create better circulation and get this sticky, moist air out of your space.
