Your home should be your oasis, a relaxing and rejuvenating spot where you can get away from it all. Unfortunately, unwanted pests can intrude on your carefully crafted space, derailing your perfect party, special feast, or relaxation time by making themselves at home, right in your home!
Flies crowd around the dining room table, spiders make their cobwebs in the corners, ants come a-marching for food scraps — it can definitely be overwhelming to keep up with common household pests!
Sure, you can invest in pest control and undergo a home fumigation. But before heading to these last resort options, it may help to try taking a more natural approach. There are all sorts of green, environmentally friendly remedies to keep your home safe and your family healthy — while also causing less harm to the planet.
Here are a few natural and harm-free ways to prevent the spread of five common household pests, so you can create a harmonious, healthy space for everyone to enjoy:
Spiders are possibly one of the most-feared and anxiety-producing pests! Very few people love to see a spider crawling around their home. At the same, though? Even though spiders are often a major source of stress, these arachnids are also largely misunderstood. While they may be creepy and crawly, spiders can actually help you in the battle against pests, as they help to naturally suppress a wide variety of indoor insects. Still want to keep these eight-legged intruders away? Studies have shown that spiders react negatively to citrus scents, so taking a citrus peel or citrus-based spray to your home’s baseboards, windowsills, and bookshelves can help create an spider-proof space. In addition, you can create a powerful repellent by a few drops of peppermint essential oil, or coconut oil and vinegar mixed in a reusable spray bottle.
Ants can be creepy, crawling, and incredibly irritating — especially when you spot them swarming around your home unexpectedly. Ants follow the food, and start to creep in when scraps fall around on the floor. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting your household surfaces can be a powerful first step in keeping ants away. There are also many all-natural solutions that can help keep these pests at bay. Vinegar and citrus oil are great natural repellents as sprays and cleansers. For instance, you can routinely wash away ant trails with a vinegar-based cleanser made from 1/4 cup vinegar, two cups water, and 10 to 15 drops of peppermint, clove, or eucalyptus. Spreading cinnamon or coffee grounds around the point where ants seem to be entering your home can keep them away, as well. Diatomaceous earth is also an all-natural and very commonly used repellant for these unwanted critters.
Mosquitoes are definitely one of the most pesky of pests, particularly during the humid summer months, when these bloodsuckers thrive and seem to spread everywhere. Mosquito bites can be incredibly irritating, and these flying, buzzing nuisances — at their worst — can actually spread disease. Want to keep your family comfortable safe? To start, be sure to keep doors and windows closed in the morning and evening, when mosquitoes tend to swarm. Around the house, make sure to get rid of sources of stagnant, standing water, like bird baths, pools, ponds, and so on. These damp spots are where mosquitoes love to gather.
You can also use a natural spray repellant by combining one part garlic juice and water in your favorite reusable spray bottle. Outdoors, look into repelling candles with citronella, or crafting your own DIY essential oil repellent made up of lemon, citronella, or eucalyptus. These pests also tend to avoid certain plants and herbs, including catnip, rosemary, and lemon balm.
Shoo fly, don’t bother me! Flies can be incredibly annoying and get in your way — and they’re the last thing you want flying around the house when you want your space feel clean and tidy. Ditch the fly swatter and try placing sachets made from small squares of cheesecloth and filled with crushed mint, bay leaf, clove or eucalyptus around the house to help to naturally repel flies. You can also make a helpful trap for fruit flies out of apple cider vinegar and dish soap. Speaking of vinegar, pouring white vinegar down drains can help keep them clean and clear, and make them less hospitable to flies. Otherwise, regularly cleaning “hot spots” — such as the refrigerator, pantry, trash can, and kitchen cabinets — can help keep many common flies at bay.
5.) Dust Mites
Dust mites are among the most pervasive and common pests in our households. These microscopic insects live in our beds, clothing, stuffed animals and more, and can cause serious reactions for allergy-sufferers. Throughout your home, regularly vacuuming and using your favorite duster is a great way to keep your surfaces clean, and help prevent the spread of dust mites around your space. To get a good night’s sleep free of irritating dust mites, try regularly washing your bedding in hot water (130 degrees Fahrenheit). Using specially designed mattress and bedding covers can also help keep the mites away.
Sprinkling a little bit of diatomaceous earth, a fine powder made from silica rocks, on your rugs, mattress, and bedding can also be a way to stop dust mites in their tracks. You can also make your own natural dust mite repellant using a few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle with water. Dust mites hate clove, lavender, peppermint, and rosemary.
