Keeping Your Home Organized, Minus the Stress and Effort

Ever wake up to a house completely out of order? Doesn’t it seem like opening your eyes to an unruly mess can negatively derail the entire day?

We’ve all been there. You’re running around after your morning shower, trying to find your favorite shirt to wear to work but of course — you just did laundry the day before and have yet to put away all the clean clothes. On top of that, the dishes aren’t done and now there’s no time to clean out the coffee pot before you start your day! For some of us without our morning coffee, well, that’s a whole other story…

Sound familiar? Don’t fret, it happens to all of us, of course! With a busy schedule in place — perhaps juggling work, family, friends, travel, and personal time — keeping your house clean and organized can sometimes feel like a major hassle.

If you sometimes feel like it takes a serious effort to keep your home together, you’re not alone! In fact, keeping our personal spaces is clean is one of the most common common stress triggers there is. On top of the dedication it takes to check off your to-do list, research has shown that living in a cluttered, dirty, or disorganized home can actually lead to increased levels of cortisol, also known as “the stress hormone.”

Life is stressful enough as it is — cleaning your home should make things better, not set you up for more anxiety, effort, and stress!

It’s time to get organized — sans all that extra stress! Here are three ways that you keep your home organized and in alignment, without all the stress and effort. With these helpful tips in place, you can relax, unwind, and truly focus on what matters most.

1.) Remember: Everything Should Have a Designated Place

From our cleaning products and tools, to our clothes, to our remotes, to kids’ toys: One of the reasons our stuff can get cluttered and messy everywhere is because it doesn’t have a dedicated “home.”

It happens with large and small items alike. For instance, a potential problem could even be something seemingly inconsequential, like lip balm or sunglasses. After you use the item, you put it in the entryway drawer. Before long, it’s found its way to the bathroom cupboard. Then you stash it in your bedroom dresser. Sooner or later, you’re rummaging around the house stressed and aggravated because you can’t find what you’re looking for!

At the same time, when you move the item around, you’re creating a snowball effect. You toss your sunglasses in the “mail” bowl in the front entry, and so now your mail ends up on the kitchen table. As a result, you drop dishes to dry on the countertop, instead of the table, and now there’s no room to prep dinner. We could go on and on.

An easy way to avoid the annoyance? Have a designated place for every item in your home (yes, every one), and remember to put it in that place right after you’re done using it.

It may seem like a small thing, but trust us,your day will be a lot less stressful when you know exactly where to find your favorite sunglasses, versus having to race around the house! When you’re ready to leave to the house for work, have successfully gotten the kids in the car, and filled your tumbler of coffee, and you’re still on time? Well, then you’ll thank yourself for staying organized ahead of time.

2.) Store with Intention — and Flair!

Once everything has a designated home, you can find ways to spice up your storage and organization methods, to make things even more fun and stress-free. In fact, once you get excited about storing all of your stuff, you may find that it becomes a lot easier to keep things organized and in their right place, without a second (stressful) thought.

There are many different ideas you can use to keep your home organized and beautiful — and your daily life stress-free. We love to browse social media, blogs, and Pinterest boards for organizing ideas. We’ve even spotlighted some of our favorite methods of cutting clutter and adding storage here on our blog, where we’ve covered everything from organizing your home office, to decluttering your whole home, to quickly (and craftily) storing childrens’ toys and games.

And if you love to shop, there are even whole stores devoted to helping you up your organization game! Go through your local storage container depot room by room, and brainstorm ideas for how you want to organize your spaces.

Most importantly, have fun, at every step of the way. Don’t hesitate to experiment, and play around with different pieces, including storage canisters, boxes, jars, or shelving — basically, anything that will keep your home feeling clean and leave you feeling energized.

3.) Put Things Away Right After You Use Them

It may sound like an incredibly simplistic task, right? But how many of us go through our day using products, without actually putting them away? We’ve all been guilty of saying “I’ll get to that later” at one point or another.

Have you ever spent a good hour trying on clothes before a night out, for example? Instead of storing your outfits, you simply throw them over a chair or ottoman with the intention of putting them all back tomorrow… or, you know, soon.

This is exactly how the negative cycle of disorganization starts! When it comes to keeping our spaces free of clutter — and our minds free of stress — soon is often the enemy of now.

Make it a regular practice to put things away in their designated space right after you use them, to help avoid clutter build up. We emphasize the word practice because we know that on some days, you just won’t feel like putting all your clothes away after trying them on, or cleaning all the dishes immediately after making that elaborate dish you’ve been excited about. And that’s OK! Just remind yourself of your intention to put your belongings away next time, and try to keep the practice as a key part of your regular cleaning routine.

The hope is that you’ll feel so stress-free once you experience such an organized and decluttered space you’ll want to keep the practice up — until, before you know it, you’re a zen master with a perfectly sorted space!
