Have you ever taken a long vacation, only to come back feeling refreshed, reinvigorated, and reinspired? Getting away from it all for a few days can really make a huge difference for your day-to-day life.
And it doesn’t even have to take a long excursion to have a major positive impact!
Getting away to the movies for a few hours can be an incredible way to spend a weekend. Going for a long walk, or a leisurely drive through the countryside, can be a refreshing way to reclaim your time. Attending your niece’s soccer game, and not checking your phone once? Well, that can be meaningful and restorative, in and of itself.
Of course, making time for all of these things is often more easily said than done, especially when your day-to-day routines get in the way. For most of us, a normal day often means working 9-5 (or longer), followed by hours spent cooking, cleaning, shopping, paying bills, doing lawn work, or rushing to family events. There’s a lot to get done – so much so, in fact, that it’s easy for certain things to fall by the wayside.
In many cases, though, balancing that busy workload means sacrificing where it counts. Running that extra errand means not taking time to relax and decompress by yourself. Having to take that extra shift at work means not getting the chance to spend a few hours at the neighborhood block party.
For the sake of your health, your happiness, and your personal wellbeing, you deserve a break. Taking some more time for yourself could make all the difference down the line. And one of the most effective ways to give yourself a break is to take some of your most pressing chores off your plate, so you can devote your time and energy to the things that matter most to you.
Some Startling Stats About Stress and Time Management
Did you know that we’re having a stress crisis here in the US? It’s true – and significant.
According to 2017 findings from the American Psychological Association (APA), Americans rate their stress level at about a 4.8 out of 10 – a historically high average. An APA survey of thousands of adults found that stress was having a physical and lifestyle impact, as well, with about 75 percent of survey respondents experiencing symptoms of acute stress. About a third of Americans reported feeling nerves or anxiousness, irritability or anger, or fatigue, all due to their high stress levels, according to the APA.
And when you look at the way most of us spend our time, it’s easy to see why.
Another 2017 study, this one from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, found that, in addition to working on weekdays and weekends, the average American devotes many hours per day to other types of labor and potential sources of stress.
For instance, the average person spends more than two hours per day on housework, and, in households with children, parents spend more than two hours per day on child care, as well. Compare that to the 30-40 minutes per day that adults devoted to “socializing and communicating” per day, and you start to see a troubling trend.
Getting Back Time for Yourself
In all, those stats – and the stories that we hear anecdotally, day in and day out – make it clear: People need help getting back time for the most important things in life. So often, day-to-day hassles and chores can pile up and draw most of your attention, making it harder to devote yourself to the things you actually want to be doing.
That could mean finishing a book, or writing a book of your own. It could mean hanging out with friends, or making a reservation at that restaurant you’ve been meaning to try for ages. It could mean taking that dream vacation, or catching up on sleep, hitting the gym, finishing your workload, or just relaxing outdoor on a particularly lovely spring day.
The choice is yours; the important thing is that you make the choice to make time for yourself. And that’s where Sweeping Dimensions would love to step in and help make things easier.
