Your kitchen is more than just a spot for cooking. It’s where you come together with family and friends. It’s where everyone gathers during a party, and where kids do homework and arts and crafts after school.
Bottom line? Your kitchen is where life happens, every day. But it’s also a space where work happens – and, sometimes, that work can be, well, smelly.
This is especially true when it comes to the trash. Like it or not, our trash cans be a major source of stinky smells. After all, just think about everything that goes in there, day in and day out.
Even as you clean and deodorize every other part of your kitchen, doesn’t it always seem like the trash just continues to smell, day after day?
If you’re suffering from a chronically stinky trash can, there is help. Here are a few strategies you can try to get the smell out of your trash bin – and make sure it doesn’t come back.
Deep-Cleaning Your Trash Can
Even if you’re the kind of person who devoutly wipes down their kitchen counters and floors, it can be easy to overlook your trash can. But a good, deep scrub down may be what it takes to eliminate some of those lingering, deep-seated odors. Here’s one method to get it clean:
- Take out the trash, and dump out any leftover food or debris
- Spray down the trash can. If it’s possible, take the can outside, and spray it with a garden hose. You can also do this in your shower or tub.
- Scrub using your favorite disinfectant. Wipe down the interior walls and floor of the can with your favorite cleaning product, then scrub. A long-handled brush can help here; you may also want to wear gloves.
- Rinse and dry. Once you’ve disinfected, gently rinse down the can one more time, then allow it to dry before you put it back in place in the kitchen.
So, now that you’ve got a sparklingly clean trash receptacle, what can you do to keep odors at bay for longer? Here are a few deodorizing “hacks” that really work:
Baking soda can be a powerful ally in the battle against stinky trash. You can use it in multiple ways. When your trash is starting to smell, but it’s not ready to be taken out, a sprinkling of baking soda can help get rid of the odor. Similarly, scattering baking soda in the bottom of your trash receptacle can help eat away at those set-in smells. And, if you’re looking to give your trash can a good scrubbing, a combination of water and baking soda can be a great way to get rid of grime and nasty smells in one fell swoop.
If you have a cat in your home, then you’ve probably got a good supply of litter already bought and ready to go. Well, this material can work just as well in your trash can as in your kitten’s litter box! Adding a layer of litter to the bottom of your trash receptacle can help absorb odors and moisture. Every so often, once the litter starts to get damp, be sure to dump it out and add some more.
We’ve sung the praises of dryer sheets before. These little slips of magic can work wonders all around your home – including in the trash. Similar to the cat litter, you can leave a few dryer sheets at the bottom of your trash bin – between the bag and the walls of the can – to help alleviate unwanted odors. You can also simply toss your used dryer sheets into the trash bag, where they’ll help mask the odor of whatever you’ve got in there.
A little bit of vanilla extract could help freshen up your trash bin. Simply add a few dashes to a smell diffusing material, such as cotton balls, or a wad of newspaper. Deposit these in the bottom of the trash container, and wait for a few hours before you add a new liner – with the lid closed, if possible. Before long, the fresh scent of vanilla should fill up your trash can, completely masking those old, lingering trashy odors.
