Time for a thought experiment (don’t worry, this’ll be fun):
You’re out of a cleaning product, and you’ve got to get your chores done. So, you head to the store, find the cleaning section, and are faced with a wall of potential choices.
Two options really catch your eye. Option A is your favorite product, one that you know gets the job done… But it’s a bit more expensive than Option B, which you’ve never heard of, but seems to be cheaper.
Which do you choose?
Here at Sweeping Dimensions, we have a philosophy known as “cleaning minimalism.” In essence, this means making purchasing decisions based on getting the products that you need, when you need them. It means making sure that you save money, time, and effort, and only stock up on the cleaning products that will really work for you.
So, for us? The answer is Option A. In fact, we believe that it’s hugely beneficial to buy the cleaning supplies you love, instead of the ones that happen to be cheaper. Here’s why:
You’ll Get the Job Done Faster and More Easily
There’s a story we go to a lot to illustrate the value of getting the cleaning products that really work, instead of the ones that just happen to be available.
We once had a client tell us this. Basically, they were trying to clean their oven. Going to the store, they stocked up on aerosol oven cleaner. After one try with the product, their oven wasn’t clean enough. Another try, still not clean. Finally, this homeowner switched over to a more concentrated oven cleaner – and found that their oven got clean much more quickly and easily.
It almost makes you wonder what those aerosol cans are actually good for, right? What good is a cleaner if you have to go through multiple bottles to do one job?
The reality is that, often, the cleaning products you’ll find on deep discount are cheaper for a reason. Maybe they’re a value brand that is actually heavily diluted, compared to a more concentrated product. Maybe the store is trying to unload it because no one is buying it – again, for a reason.
In any case, there’s a good chance that some cleaning products just won’t measure up to your high standards. It might take more time to get the job done, or a greater degree of “elbow grease.” Maybe you’ll even have to run through multiple packages of the same product! Stick with what you know works, and you’ll be able to – sorry for the cliche here – work smarter, not harder. And that means less effort and less time for you! Win-win-win.
You Won’t Contribute to Waste
Every year, humans contribute tons and tons of waste to our oceans. Much of this is in the form of plastics and chemicals. If you’re always purchasing new cleaning products just because they happen to be on sale, you could be contributing to the problem. The fewer plastic products you use up over time, the more you can rest assured that you’re helping to take care of our environment and our oceans.

You Won’t Take Up Precious Space
Have you ever reached into your cleaning cabinet to pull down something specific, only for it to be hidden behind rows and rows of other cleaning products? Or, worse, have you tried to dig out what you need, only to spill product everywhere? Or maybe – ouch – knock a heavy bottle onto your foot?
This can happen when you stock up on cleaning supplies that you don’t actually need. It can be incredibly tempting to purchase something while it’s on sale, just in case you need it for later. But what if “later” never comes? In this case, you’ve just got another unneeded product taking up space – and maybe even gathering dust. Over time, this could mean having to dump the product, because it expires or grows old, and that leads to just more waste.
Save yourself the space – and the hassle. Only get what you need, when you need it.
Finding What Works for You
Here at Sweeping Dimensions, we have a few guidelines we use when shopping for cleaning products.
For starters, we’re always interested in knowing how our purchases impact our environment, so we think about things like sustainability, biodegradability, environmental friendliness, packaging, and so on. This question is twofold: How will this product affect your environment in the short-term (like pets, kids, etc.), and in the long (so, will it contribute to harmful pollution of our lakes and oceans)?
So, for instance, if we’re talking about a chemical cleaner, is it gentle enough to use around every member of the family? Or, for cleaning tools, it’s worth asking how this product will affect the planet. For example, microfiber is reusable and highly effective – making it a much surer investment than some other types of cloths and dusters.
We also tend to prefer more concentrated cleaning solutions. This way, you can use less product to get the job done. We also consider whether it’s possible to use one cleaning product in multiple ways. Dish soap, for instance, is an effective yet sensitive cleaning agent, which you can use far beyond the kitchen! The more you can reuse a product, the better – for your wallet, your cleaning caddy, and the environment.
Of course, we also know that every home is going to have different wants and needs.
