How to Make Sure Your Guest Room Is Ready for Company

  • A clean guest bedroom

Do you have family planning to stop by for the winter holidays? Is your child the one who’s always bringing home friends for weekend sleepovers? Are you the family member with a cool city home, which all of the cousins and aunts and uncles just have to visit and see?

In all these cases and more, it sounds like your guest bedroom is going to get a workout!

What can you do before your guests arrive to make sure that their bedroom is clean, welcoming, and ready to go? Here are six steps to help you get your guest room ready for company:

1.) Clean or Replace the Linens

Fresh bedding is an absolute must, whenever you have guests coming to stay. After all, no one wants to sleep in a dirty bed! Just before your guests arrive, be sure to launder the sheets, including pillowcases – or swap out the old sheets for a fresh set.

2.) Hit the Cleaning Trifecta – Vacuuming, Dusting, and Cleaning Windows

Your guest room may be an area that is always part of your cleaning routine, or it might be a spot that you put off until just before guests arrive. In either case, before your next guests arrive, be sure to take some time to get this room feeling clean and welcoming!

Three important tasks for making sure your guest room is guest-ready?

  • Vacuum & Clean the Floor. Before your guests arrive, be sure to vacuum the floor to get rid of any dust or debris on the carpet or rug. If you have hardwoods or tile in the bedroom, be sure to clean these surfaces, as well, using a broom, dry mop, or your favorite cleaning method of choice.
  • Dust. Make sure your guest bedroom is clear of pesky, allergy-inducing dust! Before your guests arrive, be sure to dust the surfaces around the room. This includes furniture, such as the the bedside table and dresser, as well as other spots around the room – ceiling fans, the tops of bureaus, baseboards, etc.
  • Clean Windows and Mirrors. Before your guests arrive, let the light shine in! Be sure to clean the windows for a streak-free shine. You may want to clean and polish any mirrors or other glass surfaces in the bedroom, as well.

3.) Get Rid of Clutter

Does your guest bedroom double as your home office? Or yoga studio? Or is it maybe just another space to turn into storage for many months out of the year? If that’s the case, you’re not alone! But before your guests arrive, be sure to get rid of the clutter that may have built up. If possible, move it into another room, where your guests aren’t likely to notice it, such as your master bedroom, or the garage.

4.) Lay Out the “Hotel” Amenities

There’s no reason that your friends and family shouldn’t feel like they’re staying at a 5-star hotel when they come to visit! Before they arrive, be sure to put out the essentials that will make their stay feel comfortable and welcoming. Here are some easy, practical ideas to get your listed started – we’re sure you’ll think of many more!

  • Fresh towels
  • Robe
  • Slippers
  • Extra pillows or blankets
  • Bathroom products (shampoo, soap, body wash, shaving cream, etc)
  • “Info” card (with WiFi password, answers to FAQs about the house, or so on)
  • Water bottles
  • Extra hangers in the closet
  • Bedside table, complete with lamp, notepad, water cup, phone charger, etc.

5.) Have a Sitting Area Ready to Go

While it’s nice to come in from the road and jump onto a fresh bed, don’t forget that your guest may also want to have a place to sit. With this in mind, make sure that you add a space in the room for them to sit that isn’t the bed. This could mean adding a small desk/workstation to one wall, a small lounge chair in the corner, or even a stool in front of a makeup mirror. Whatever you add, make sure this area is ready for company, taking time to ensure that it’s clean, smells good, and has everything your guest may need.

6.) Personalize the Room for Your Guests

Finally, if you have the time, add a few flourishes that show you’ve thought about your visitors’ unique wants. For example, if your cousin is traveling with a small child or two in two, maybe take a few steps to childproof their area, in spots like the power outlets or in the guest bathroom. Or, if it’s your parents or in-laws stopping by, maybe add a few fresh floral arrangements to show how much the visit means to you. Allergy sufferer? Be sure to add a special box of tissues, and a few plants to help clean and purify the air. There’s no shortage of ways to get creative, and really help your guests feel right at home!
