“Make your bed!”
It’s common advice, that you’ve probably heard before. Maybe your parents, grandparents, or aunts and uncles were the ones who drilled it into you every morning when you were younger.
Or maybe it’s a mantra you’ve picked up for yourself, to be repeated between the time when you have your first sip of coffee, and before you head out the door.
So, why do so many people tell you to make your bed? What’s the big deal, really? Who cares if the comforter is a little askew, or the top sheet is bundled up? Does it really, truly matter if your pillows are thrown around, or your sheets aren’t perfectly folded down?
Turns out, making your bed each morning can make a huge, positive impact on many different parts of your life!
The Experts Agree: Making Your Bed Makes a Big Difference
Still need convincing? If you don’t believe us, maybe you’ll listen to a Navy SEAL.
Here’s what Naval Admiral William McRaven said in a commencement speech at the University of Texas, Austin:
“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.
By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.”
That’s a beautiful idea – and it rings so true! Making your bed in the morning is one way to set things up for a very productive day. Do it one time, and you may start to notice how differently your day goes.
And after you turn it into a daily habit, and do it lots of times? Your whole life could change for the better!
We’re not just guessing about this, either. It’s a scientific fact that making your bed can help you live a better life.
As Psychology Today reports:
“71 percent of bed makers consider themselves happy; while 62 percent of non-bed-makers admit to being unhappy. Bed makers are also more likely to like their jobs, own a home, exercise regularly, and feel well rested, whereas non-bed-makers hate their jobs, rent apartments, avoid the gym, and wake up tired. All in all, bed makers are happier and more successful than their rumple-sheeted peers.”
You read that right: People who make their beds are more likely to be happy, well-rested, productive, and successful than people who don’t.
All of those benefits, from just a few fluffed pillows and pulled down bedspreads? Yep!
Why Does Making the Bed Lead to So Many Good Things?
Making your bed really does make more of a difference than you’d think. But how does it all work?
Here are three major reasons why this little morning chore can have such an enormous impact on the rest of your day:
1.) Sets the Tone for a Productive Day
As Admiral McRaven explained, accomplishing this one task first thing in the morning gives you a little boost, a small rush of satisfaction, a bit of pride. This daily step is a great “anchor” activity; it gives you focus and grounding, and puts you on the best path for a more productive, meaningful day. Who knows where making the bed will take you? Maybe it will allow you to look around your home and see what else needs to be cleaned and straightened. Or perhaps it will give you the little bit of positivity you need to roll into work and get through your “to-do” list.
To think of it another way? Making your bed first thing starts your day off with one good, productive decision. From there, it’ll feel easier to do the next good thing, and then the next. Before long, you’re cruising through your day more easily – and it’s all thanks to that one little “keystone habit,” helping you train your brain for success.
2.) Improves Your Mood and Lowers Stress
The action of making your bed is one way to feel like you’re taking charge, and gaining control over your life. This is a powerful feeling, one that can make you feel a lot better as the day goes on!
At the same time, this little activity is a great chance to do some deep breathing, start stretching out, and perform some visualizations on what’s to come – all healthy morning habits that can get your day started on the right foot. In short? Making your bed is a centering, grounding activity, one that can help make you happier throughout the rest of your day.
3.) Makes Your Room Look and Feel More Comfortable
According to findings, we spend about a third of our time at home in the bedroom. That’s a lot of time to spend in any one room. Because the bedroom is such an important space, making it look and feel more comfortable is an important step to take. Making your bed can help!
Tackling your pillows and sheets is a great way to make the bed, the focal point of your room, feel clean and organized, which can help the whole space feel better. Similarly, to go back, making your bed can be a great launching point for daily chores, encouraging you to dust, vacuum, and organize other spots in your bedroom as well.
Don’t underestimate the power of a clean room! Studies show that people are happier, less stressed, and more productive in spaces that feel clean and tidy.
Plus, doesn’t it feel so much comfier hopping into a bed covered in crisp, clean bedding, instead of crumpled, crinkly sheets? So, on top of everything else, making your bed each morning is a way to help get a better night’s sleep a few hours later!
