Welcome back to our ongoing series on what we can all do to help take better care of our environment!
Last time, we dove into the amazing whale-watching trip that inspired this mini-series, and discussed all of the ways that humans can affect the creatures of the ocean, for better and for worse.
From throwing away plastics to overusing harsh chemicals, a lot of the little things that people do can have a massive impact on whales, fish, plants, and all of the amazing wildlife that call the lakes, oceans, and rivers their home.
In this piece, I thought we would spotlight all of the ways that we keep it green when we service our clients’ homes, offices, commercial facilities, and apartment properties. Hopefully, seeing some of the steps that we’ve taken to become more sustainable with our cleaning techniques might inspire you to make some changes of your own!
No matter how big or small the job, there are lots of things we do to make each cleaning as environmentally-friendly as possible:
1.) We Don’t Buy More Than We Need
Our team has written on this blog before about the ways that all people can practice what we call “cleaning minimalism.” This practice is a great way to keep things organized and consume less overall, which means fewer plastic bottles, wrappers, and packaging to dispose of. We buy products that we know really work, or which have multiple functions, so we don’t purchase more than we need. You could go for the “cheap” stuff – but then you’ll just end up using more of it, and getting less done.
2.) We Purchase Concentrated Solutions
One way to make sure that you’re buying products that work? We buy more concentrated, powerful cleaning products. With more concentrated cleaners, we can use less on each job, so every purchase we make lasts longer. That means buying fewer plastic bottles. And speaking of packaging? Many cleaners come in forms that aren’t especially useful, such as aerosol cans. In some cases, it can take 50 or 60 spray cans to equal the cleaning power in one bottle of concentrated solution.
3.) We Use Environmentally Sound Cleaning Solutions
Cleaning products have an impact. Unfortunately, not all cleaning solutions are created equal – and some commercially available cleaning supplies really shouldn’t be in people’s homes or offices. Either these products are not effective, or you have to use a lot more to be effective, which ends up being wasteful over time. It may cost a little more upfront to opt for superior products, but it’s worth it – both for the impact it has around our clients’ homes and workplaces, and because it allows us to buy less over time, which saves money while saving the oceans!
There are also products that are so much gentler and easier on your living environment, compared to harsh chemical cleaners.
For example, concentrated Dawn dish soap (a personal favorite of ours at Sweeping Dimensions!) is an amazingly powerful and versatile cleaner that you can put to work in so many places – but it’s also soft and gentle enough that it can be used to clean up ducks and other wildlife after an oil spill! That makes it perfect for households with pets, kids, or family members with allergies. Many Dawn products are also made with biodegradable cleaning ingredients, making them better for the environment.
That’s just one example. Give us a call and we can give you plenty of other ideas. But the bottom line is that there are extremely green products out there, and we love to introduce them to our clients! From water-based cleaners to solutions made with essential oils, safe for all types of environments, there is a green cleaning option out there that will work for you!
4.) We’ve Made the Swap for More Sustainable Cleaning Tools
While there’s something to be said for cleaning the way our parents and grandparents used to, we have many, many more options than they could have ever dreamed of!
For example? Here at Sweeping Dimensions, we’ve swapped out the use of disposable cleaning products for sturdier, more useful, and more environmentally friendly products. One big way we do this is by really focusing on using products made of microfiber and bamboo.
Microfiber mops and cleaning cloths are magical in the way they lock up dust, dirt, and debris, and they can be washed and reused again and again. And don’t forget about bamboo “paper” towels! These look and feel like the old thing, but each sheet of bamboo can be washed and reused up to 100 times. That means that just one roll of bamboo towels could replace up to 300 rolls of old-fashioned paper towels!
At SDCS, we always make a sweeping effort to make life less stressful!
For us, that means bringing all of the supplies needed to clean your home or office, with an emphasis on green, environmentally sound cleaning solutions at absolutely no additional cost to our clients.
We’re always looking for new ways to go green, and make sure that our cleaning methods are up to the highest standards. Want to join in the conversation? Be sure to join our growing community of environmentally-focused Chicagoans on Facebook and Instagram, where we share green cleaning tips, tricks, and secrets all the time.
And for now, we’ll leave you with a question: Now that you know some of what we do to make our cleaning habits greener, what can you do around your home or office to start making a difference?
See you next time!
