Three Ways to Use Coconut Products Around the House

Calling all coconut lovers!

There are so many ways to enjoy coconut. This delicious food is a versatile ingredient for sweet and savory dishes. These days, you’re even likely to find it in your favorite shampoos and beauty products. Because, besides being sweet and craveable, coconut oil is great for your skin, nails and hair!

And get this: Coconut can also become a staple in your cleaning routine!

Because World Coconut Day is September 2nd, it’s time to celebrate this amazing fruit. We’ve prepared a list of three great ways to add coconut into your home cleaning routine. Here are three easy, exciting ways to use coconut products around the house. What are your favorites?

Keep Your Wood Looking Sleek

Not a fan of the toxic smell that comes with most store-bought wood cleaners? Coconut oil can be the natural alternative you’ve been looking for.

It’s simple and easy to use, and best of all, it can help your wooden surfaces reach full-shine potential!

To achieve a sleek wood look, apply a tablespoon-sized amount of coconut oil to wooden furniture, and gently spread it across the surface with a soft, reusable cloth. Doing this will help to moisturize the wood, and bring out its natural colors.

To take your wood cleaning a step further, you also can use coconut oil to help refinish your wooden surfaces, like tables or countertops.

Start by gently sanding down the desired wooden table or piece of furniture, then wash the surface with soapy water. After letting the surface dry, it’s time to introduce the coconut oil.  Take roughly one tablespoon of coconut oil and rub it across the entire furniture piece you’re refinishing. Let this sit in for 15 minutes, and then follow up by buffing the entire area with a soft. dry cloth in wide circle motions.

Kitchen Helper

Coconut has many uses for cooking – but its potential in the kitchen goes far beyond just being a delicious ingredient.

For instance, one way to use coconut oil in your kitchen is for seasoning and “cleaning” your cast iron pots and pans.

To give this kitchen tool more “zest,” preheat your oven to 400 degrees and add a thin layer of coconut oil to the pan or pot. Then, place it onto the middle rack and let it bake for an hour. To help catch any coconut oil runoff, make sure to add a baking sheet underneath, so you can avoid having to do any additional cleaning!

And what about the wooden elements in your kitchen? Coconut oil can be used to help recondition preserve your wooden cutting boards, just like the larger wooden surfaces and furniture pieces in your home. By rubbing in a layer of coconut oil to your cutting boards and letting it sit in for 10-15 minutes before wiping off the excess, you’ll help to sanitize and moisturize one of the kitchen tools that experiences the most wear and tear.

Don’t Forget the Bathroom

Coconut is a food item we’re familiar with using in the kitchen, but can it really help your bathroom reach its maximum potential?

If you’re looking for an alternative to store-bought cleaners, you may want to look into switching your current shower and bathtub cleaners with coconut oil, along with just a few additional ingredients.

To take the non-toxic path for cleaning your shower and tub, mix together baking soda and coconut oil to form a paste. After smearing the mixture onto built-up soap scum and mildew, you’ll likely notice results within 10 minutes! Simply wipe away the excess homemade cleaner with a cloth or towel and then rinse with warm water, and your shower will look squeaky clean.

Coconut oil also can be used to eliminate rust build up, which can be especially persistent in a steamy bathroom. You won’t need to create a paste; instead, wipe a tablespoon of oil to any surfaces with noticeable rust, like faucets or exposed pipes, and let it sit in for an hour. Lastly, wipe down the surfaces with warm water and watch the rust dissolve!

Coconut products are also great for other, non-cleaning purposes in the bathroom, too – especially if this is where you beautify for the day! Coconut oil can be used as anything from moisturizer to makeup remover, and can even to help reduce split ends and damaged hair. It’s truly a miracle ingredient!
