Whew, you’ve made it! Summer is finally winding down. And parents and guardians all over Chicago know that means only one thing: back to school season is here!
Finally, after months of pool parties, family vacations, shuttling back and forth from summer camp, finding ways to keep the kids entertained on 95-degree days… After all that, it’s finally time for the little ones to go back to class.
First things first? Take a breather and relax! After dealing with a summer of activities and the back to school shopping rush, you’ve definitely earned a break!
But don’t forget: Even as the summer winds down, another busy season is just about to kick-off. For a lot of families, lazy summer days are about to be replaced by soccer practice, chess club, parent-teacher conferences, sick days, and more.
Before the school year really gets going, you might want to take advantage of the back to school season to get in some much-needed cleaning and organizing. Looking to make the most of your time? Here are five areas where you may wish to put your focus:
Clean Out Kids’ Bedrooms
After a summer of hanging out at home, kids’ bedrooms can start to look a little bit messy. Actually, that’s an understatement. At the end of the summer, plenty of kids’ bedrooms look like they’ve been ransacked – think clothes everywhere, toys and games left out, smudged surfaces, dirty carpets.
It happens! To help get your young ones in the right headspace, and transition from “summer” to “school” modes, it might help to do a deep clean of their bedrooms! Tackling clutter and getting ridding of messes can help give kids the room they need to get their schoolwork and other fall activities done.
At the same time, this can be a great chance for you and your child to go through and reorganize – and maybe even get rid of things that are taking up space. An old toy that didn’t get played with all summer? Clothes that no longer fit after a summer growth spurt? The back to school season is a great chance to say, “out with the old, in with the new!”
Get the Bathrooms Sparkling Clean
During the school year, bathrooms can start to become like super-highways. Think of all the traffic that goes in and out! In the morning, you’ve got kids running around and getting ready for school. At the end of the day, you’ve got everyone getting ready for bed. In the middle? Maybe a student athlete or two comes in and absolutely needs to shower, for everyone’s sake.
Before the school year kicks off, you and your family might want to turn your attention to the bathroom!
Cleaning bathroom surfaces, getting rid of mold and mildew, organizing the vanity, and getting rid of any lingering odors can help make the bathroom look and feel better – and make the whole day easier for everyone!
Clean Off Work and Play Areas
Do your kids have a dedicated homework area? What about a playroom? Even if the answer is as simple as “the kitchen table” or “the living room floor,” it’s important to make sure that these spaces for work and play are ready for the school year.
This is especially true after a long summer! Over the course of a few months, even a little bit of extra kiddie time can have a very big effect. Crayon marks on the kitchen table? Glitter in the carpet? Scuffs on your countertops? Smudges on the stainless steel refrigerator?
It’s important to deal with all of these little things now, when you have some free time. The more you and your family clean off these areas before the school year, the easier it may be for the whole family to make the switch back to reality after months of the summer mindset.
Get Rid of the Summer “Mess” Zones
Rain. Mud. Sweat. Mold and mildew. Grass clippings. Pool water. Sand. Paw prints.
During the summer, the warm weather and long days outside can be heavenly… Except when your family brings the great outdoors in with them!
With the kids gone and the weather getting a little cooler (hopefully), the back to school season may just be the perfect time to tackle those unique summer messes! Now might be the perfect time to treat your carpets, clean your home’s doors and entryways, clean the floors in your garage, wipe down your doormats, and turn your attention to your patio area and outdoor furniture.
Clean the Spots You’d Normally Ignore
It can take time – and a strategy – to carry out a deep clean. And time is a precious resource, one that a lot of us just don’t have enough of.
But for some parents, finally sending the kids back to school can mean just enough free time to finally knock out an important chore or two. Tackling the spots in your home that you don’t normally clean can do wonders, and truly make your whole house feel cleaner, fresher, and more welcoming.
The back to school season – when the kids are busy and you’re just between summer and fall – is the perfect time to treat things you’d normally let slide. We’re talking about cleaning tasks like:
- Vacuuming all fabrics and upholstery, including furniture, pillows, and drapes
- Moving furniture and appliances to clean underneath and behind them
- Cleaning high and out-of-reach spots, like the tops of cabinets, ceiling fans, and corners
- Cleaning vents and air filters
- Deep cleaning appliances, such as the oven, washing machine, fridge, or dishwasher
- Baseboards and molding
- The area behind the toilet
- Doorknobs, locks, and handles
- Indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures
Every house is going to be a little bit different, but the truth is the same – there’s no time like back to school to tackle the spots you normally ignore!
