How to Clean Your Pet’s Favorite Spots

  • A pet lounges in its favorite spot

For loving pet owners, a beloved dog or cat is a member of the family – and they tend get their own living spaces around the house. Cat towers, pet beds, maybe a whole section on the sofa, maybe even a whole “play room;” when you really love your pet, there’s no limit to what you’ll do to make sure they’re safe, comfy, and happy.

Of course, even the best pets can make a mess. And unlike, say, a child, you can’t really tell a cat to pick up its room… You kind of have to take the charge, and make sure that you get all of the stains, odors, and hair that can build up over time.

To help take care of your home – and make sure that your furry friend is always comfortable – there are a few tools to always have on hand. Most important may be lint brushes and a vacuum with attachments; these two tools can do wonders when it comes to picking up hair and dander from all sorts of surfaces.

So, now, let’s take a look at four pet-friendly spots around the house that may be giving you trouble:

1.) Pet Bed

A big, poofy dog or cat bed can be the perfect place for your animal friend to lounge. But, when your pup or kitty spends all their time in bed, this spot can get messy in a hurry.

To get rid of hair or dander, regularly go over the bed with your vacuum (preferably with an attachment designed to handle fur), and clear away stuck-on fur with your brush. Devoted animal lovers may even want to pick off hairs by hand, wearing rubber gloves.

And to get rid of microbes and other nasty stuff that may be lingering on your animal’s bed, PetMD recommends washing it at least once every two weeks. Be sure to read the label for proper machine washing instructions. To make things easier, you can always lay a blanket or cover over the bed; this way, you can wash just one sheet, instead of trying to cram an entire piece of furniture into your washer/dryer.

2.) Cat Towers

Does your feline family member love to climb up and down their cat tower? If your cat can’t get enough of their special cat furniture, it’s important to know how to keep these items clean.

Your vacuum cleaner’s carpet brush attachment can help get hair from a lot of these fabric-covered surfaces. Be sure to see if the pillows or cushions on your cat tree are detachable and machine-washable. A lint roller is another invaluable tool for getting up loose hairs.

Finally, remember that cats can leave behind lots of little stains – even though they love to keep themselves clean! To get rid of urine and other stains on your cat’s playplace, mix a little bit of pet-friendly detergent (such as cat shampoo) and water, then blot on the affected area with a clean, dry cloth.

With just a little bit of upkeep, your cat will be able to enjoy their tower for hours at a time. Meanwhile, you won’t have to put up with tons of hair or nasty odors!

3.) Sofa

Does your pet have a dedicated couch cushion that they call their own? Does your animal friend love to snuggle up on the sofa with the rest of the family?

If so, it’s important to keep the sofa clean. After all, guests need somewhere to sit when they come to visit. How can you keep your sofa looking, smelling, and feeling good?

One thing you can do upfront is be preventative. Like we mentioned earlier, laying down a large blanket or sheet over the pet’s favorite spot on the couch can do wonders, helping prevent stains from damaging the upholstery and making it easier to collect and dispose of hair and dander.

If you don’t cover up your couch or armchair, then it’s important to keep it clean. That means regularly removing pet hair with a lint roller, dryer sheet, fabric brush, or vacuum attachment. It also means spot-treating stains when they come up, so that your sofa stays clean and usable.

4.) Nose Prints on Glass

Does your animal love to get up close to the glass and watch the world go by? It can be cute watching your beloved pet look at cars or squirrels through the window… until it’s time to clean up the nose prints and drool on your glass!

One of the most important things you can do is be vigilant! Don’t let drool and nose marks dry, or they’ll become a lot harder to clean. Instead, regularly wipe down your glass surfaces with a microfiber cloth and your favorite glass cleaner.

Time, the right product, and a little bit of elbow grease should be enough to keep your glass surfaces looking great, no matter how much your pet loves to get up close and personal with them.
