3 Household Surfaces You May Be Damaging

  • Places in your home that you may damage by overcleaning

Everybody wants a sparklingly clean household. You know the dream. No spills or stains anywhere. No dust or debris gathered up in hard-to-reach places. Floors and countertops clean enough to eat off of. No kids’ toys scattered around.

Now, often, this is a lot easier said than done! Life gets in the way, and it can be hard to find time to clean for many of us.

On the other hand? Sometimes, when people try to do a deep clean all on their own, they make common mistakes that can actually do more harm than good. Here are three everyday household surfaces that you might be cleaning wrong – along with some easy-to-follow guidelines on how to tackle these spots the right way!

Wooden Surfaces – Countertops, Furniture, Etc.

Wood needs your attention, no doubt. But keep in mind that a whole host of issues can come up when you overclean wood surfaces and products. One of the biggest and hardest to recover from is warping.

To help make your wooden furniture pieces, countertops, and flooring look and feel fresh for longer, you only need to treat them to a nice dusting and wipe down regularly. Too much more, and you may damage that beautiful grain!

You also need to be aware of what kind of cleaning solutions you’re using. For instance, wooden countertops and desks don’t need globs of polish every week. Instead, focus on dusting and light wipedowns with a wood-approved cleaning solution. Don’t soak your wood and products with tons of water, either! Too much water can damage that beautiful finish.

When it comes to cleaning your hardwood floors, you’ll want to choose a product that’s non-toxic and won’t cause them to dull. Use only wood-approved cleaning products and avoid harsh chemicals, which can ruin their finish.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel appliances, cooking equipment, and fixtures are all the rage – and it’s not hard to see why!

This sparkling metal is stylish and functional. But it’s also prone to showing tons of fingerprints, and becoming dull and smudged up over time. When this time comes, it can be tempting to give your stainless steel all you’ve got! But this approach can actually do more harm than good.

So, first, the “don’ts” – stainless steel is more sensitive than you’d think, and it can show streaks and get damaged very easily. For this reason, never use steel wool or any other type of abrasive sponge or brush on a stainless steel surface. Similarly, you’ll want to use cleaning agents that are nice and gentle – no chloride-based cleaners, oven cleaner, or long soaks in soapy tap water.

Now, the “dos.” First, we’re big fans of microfiber cloths. These soft, ribbed cloths are perfect for getting the fingerprints off of a stainless steel surface. When looking for a store-bought cleaning solution, make sure you find one that is meant for stainless steel. Even then, you may want to test it on an out-of-the-way spot, to make sure it doesn’t cause any damage. As for DIY solutions? Extremely gentle mixtures – such as a spritz of vinegar followed up by olive oil, or dish soap and baby oil – should do the trick.

Stone Countertops (and other Surfaces)

Vinegar is often used for DIY cleaning recipes. And it definitely has its place! But one part of your home you should never clean with vinegar is your stone surfaces, including your stone countertops.

Nobody wants their stone surfaces to be permanently scarred! Well, common acidic substances, like vinegar or lemon juice, can easily etch your gorgeous stone surfaces, turning them from sleek to “eek.”

Instead, always make sure you use a cleaning agent that is marked as safe for stone. These solutions are generally fairly light, and pH-neutral. For your marble or granite countertops, you can usually get by with little more than a clean, dry cloth and a little bit of water. Maybe try some dish soap, too!

One last thing? Whether you’re wiping down stone, wood, or metal, always be sure that you’re using a clean cloth! Reusing the same, dirty rag over and over again can just spread germs and grime from one place to another. Nobody wants that!
