March 23 Is National Puppy Day! How Do You Clean Up After Man’s Best Friend?

Did you know that in March, we celebrate National Puppy Day? It’s true!

In 2018 (the Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac, by the way), this adorable holiday falls on March 23rd. Not only is this doggy day a great time to show some love to the amazing pooch in your life, it’s also a chance to help puppies in shelters across the country find new homes.

Whether you’re an experienced pet owner, or you’re welcoming a puppy into your family for the first time, this time of year is also great for thinking about cleaning.

It is spring cleaning season, after all! What are you doing to help make your home feel nice and fresh?

We’ve got a few ideas! Here are five easy, effective ways to help keep your house clean and canine-proof, for National Puppy Day and beyond:

1.) Keep Your Pup Well-Groomed

It’s important to make sure that your dog is always well-groomed and cared for. Not only will this make sure your pup is always looking and feeling their best, it will also help keep your home cleaner, for longer!

For example, making sure that your dog’s hair is cut and shampooed at least once a month can help prevent your pet from shedding dander and hair all over the place. Also, keeping your dog’s nails neat and trim can help prevent scratches and damage to your floors and upholstery.

2.) Prepare for the Hair

Hair, hair, everywhere!

Even with regular grooming, your doggy is likely to shed hair all around the house. There are a few ways to help get rid of hair quickly, and make your home feel cleaner:

  • Keep a lint roller in your cleaning caddy. These can help get the hair from your clothes, as well as pillows, lamp shades, and furniture.
  • Invest in an automatic vacuum, such as a Roomba. This way, you can rest assured that you’re keeping your floors clean, without having to break out the vacuum cleaner every few hours!
  • Use a hand vacuum or an upholstery attachment to go over your furniture.

3.) Always Have Stain Remover Handy

Dogs are adorable… but, as any dog mom knows, they can sometimes be pretty gross, too.

If your puppy has an accident inside, it’s important to clean up quickly. The longer you let that mess stick around, the more likely it is to leave a permanent stain on your carpets or rugs.

Always have a pet-friendly stain remover handy. If you can’t decide on a professional brand, you can make your own by combining dishwashing liquid and water. Blot the wet area with a clean towel to absorb moisture, then apply your stain remover solution, and continue blotting with a damp towel until the stain is removed.

4.) Help Your Dog Wipe Their Paws

Muddy paw prints can be cute… in a picture, or on a card. When they’re in your house? That’s a little bit of a different story.

Fortunately, you can help keep your dog’s paws clean without too much effort.

For one easy solution to dirty paws, consider laying down a durable doormat outside your door, with a washable rug immediately inside. This way, you have a system that may help catch at least some dirt and debris before Fido tracks them across the house.

When the weather is particularly bad, you may also want to give your doggy a little foot bath. Keep a roll of paper towels and a container of water near the front door to brush mud, snow, or gravel off of your pup’s paws right after a walk. Once you’re inside, just gently dip your dog’s paws into the water, wipe them off with the towel, and then let your friend run free!

5.) Cover Up Your Puppy’s Favorite Spots

If your doggy has a few favorite spots to nap or lounge around the house, throw a cover over those areas to help keep them clean. A spare sheet, a warm towel, a cozy old blanket – use whatever you have on hand to protect your furniture and floors from hair, stains, and odors. You can also swap out or wash these covers whenever you need to.

If you want to invest a little bit more, you may also want to look into buying indoor décor made of durable, pet-friendly materials. Microfiber and microsuede, for example, can help repel some stains and make it easier to brush up loose hair.
